Umoja African Drumming & Dance Group
In 2019, Thanks to Women in Philanthropy (a fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry), the Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton was able to implement a new African Drumming and Dance Group called “Umoja,” honoring Gullah/Geechee Heritage.
Our African Drumming & Dance group educated our members about the culture from which they emerge, preserving the
traditional music of Gullah people.
This program also taught the importance of working as a team, promoted discipline,
allowed members to express themselves creatively, develops listening skills, enhanced self-esteem and emphasized
character lessons about responsibility, respect, control and working to achieve goals.
The Lowcountry of South Carolina is known as the "Gullah Corridor" as Gullah people survived and thrived for centuries in isolated rural communities. Today the Gullah culture is endangered as development in our areas continues and Gullah
people lose their traditions.
Women in Philanthropy supported the Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton to ensure Gullah culture is taught and preserved through our young members by creating an African Drumming & Dance Group that
embraces this traditional music and shares this music that is such an important part of Lowcountry history through performances.
Members had to earn the right to participate in our African Drumming & Dance Group based on their interest in the program, as well as their behavior and grades. They also had to maintain good grades and behavior to remain in the program.
Members exercised the skills they've developed by creating performances for various audiences, including the 2019 Bluffton Christmas parade and 19th Annual Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration.
Members learned various polyrhythms (simultaneous use of two or more conflicting rhythms) and learned to dance to the rhythm of African drums. In combination with learning about African music, members also learned about the importance of respect, which is a key message in African drumming. This program promoted respect and appreciation of this ancient cultural music, as well for respect for the instruments, themselves and others.
